There are several means of achieving compaction of a material. Some are more appropriate for soil compaction than others, while some techniques are only suitable for particular soils or soils in particular conditions. Some are more suited to compaction of non-soil materials such as asphalt. Generally, those that can apply significant amounts of shear as well as compressive stress, are most effective.
The available techniques can be classified as:
- Static - a large stress is slowly applied to the soil and then released.
- Impact - the stress is applied by dropping a large mass onto the surface of the soil.
- Vibrating - a stress is applied repeatedly and rapidly via a mechanically driven plate or hammer. Often combined with rolling compaction (see below).
- Gyrating - a static stress is applied and maintained in one direction while the soil is a subjected to a gyratory motion about the axis of static loading. Limited to laboratory applications.
- Rolling - a heavy cylinder is rolled over the surface of the soil. Commonly used on sports pitches. Roller-compactors are often fitted with vibratory devices to enhance their effectiveness.
- Kneading - shear is applied by alternating movement in adjacent positions. An example, combined with rolling compaction, is the 'sheepsfoot' roller used in waste compaction at landfills.

Vane Shear Apparatus
Conforming to the specifications and tolerance in accordance to I.S.-2720 part-XIII., Used for the specimen size:-60mm. x 60mm. x 25mm.Manually operated. It consists of:-01.) Loading Unit:-With V strips on which shear box housing rests, load yoke with direct and lever system for applying normal load to the capacity of 8kg/cm. sq., fixture for proving ring, bracket for holding dial gauge, and manually operated lead screw for application of shear stress. Complicated counter balancing arrangement has been dispensed with and the unit is provided with pre-calibrated loading yoke.
02.)SHEAR BOX ASSEMBLY FOR SQUARE SPECIMEN:- complete with two halves of shear-box, pair of plain gripper plates, pair of perforated gripper plates, pair of porous disc, loading pad, base plate and “U” bracket.
03.) SHEAR BOX HOUSING:-Suitable to accommodates shear box assembly complete with two ball roller strips.
04).SPECIMEN CUTTER:-For cutting specimen size 60mm. x 60mm x 25mm obtained from field or from larger specimen. 05.) SET OF WEIGHTS:-To give normal stress of 3kg/cm.sq. On specimen comprises of 4 x 0.05, 1 x 0.2, 3 x 0.5, and 1 x 1.0kg/cm.sq.
06.) PROVING RING:- Made of special alloy steel equipped with dial gauge least count 0.002mm with calibration certificate capacity 250 kgs,(2.5 KN).
